چکیده

Abstract Optical mesh networks using intelligent optical cross-connects are the choice for the next generation optical core. Mesh networks can be designed for fast and guaranteed recovery from single failures and can be designed to protect traffic more efficiently via shared mesh restoration. In this paper, we present a mesh restoration architecture for the optical core. The architecture provides for all the advantages of mesh networks and achieves ring-like restoration performance. Furthermore, the protocol allows for two types of restoration depending on the application needs: dedicated mesh protection that guarantees sub-50 ms. restoration latency and shared mesh restoration that can restore services within 50 ms. to a couple hundred ms., which is sufficient for the majority of the voice-band and other streaming services.

Cycle-Oriented Distributed Preconfiguration: Ring-like Speed with Mesh-like Capacity for Self-planning Network Restoration

Cycle-oriented preconfiguration of spare capacity is a new idea for the design and operation of mesh-restorable networks. It offers a sought-after goal: to retain the capacityefficiency of a mesh-restorable network, while approaching the speed of line-switched self-healing rings. We show that through a strategy of pre-failure cross-connection between the spare links of a mesh network, it is pos...

Reliability in Single Domain vs. Multi Domain Optical Mesh Networks

Network reliability is an important element of a service level agreement and is typically evaluated based on the number of unavailable minutes per year. The widespread belief is that networks with faster restoration times are more reliable, created by the assumption that fast restoration from a failure leads to smaller down time. This is not necessarily the case since it has been shown that rel...

Increasing the Efficiency of Span-restorable Mesh Networks on Low-connectivity Graphs

We propose a refinement to existing methods for span-restorable mesh capacity design to increase the capacity efficiency on sparse facility graphs. The resultant designs comprise a special class of restorable network that is intermediate between pure span restoration and path restoration. Most of the efficiency of path restoration is achieved by targeting chain sub-networks that ordinarily requ...

Spare Capacity Modelling and Its Applications in Survivable Ip-over-optical Networks

As the interest in IP-over-optical networks are becoming the preferred core network architecture, survivability has emerged as a major concern for network service providers; a result of the potentially huge traffic volumes that will be supported by optical infrastructure. Therefore, implementing recovery strategies is critical. In addition to the traditional recovery schemes based around protec...
